I tried almost every school and found that life has a good defense with thunder as an offense. It says if you look that thunder has a strong offense but weak defense. If you have life to go with it, you can heal yourself enough to to stay in the game.
FYI though: you can only get the unicorn heal card (heals all allies) if Life is your primary school. most other heal cards only heal yourself.
-Balance has lots of strengthening and weakening cards, but few attack cards.
-The myth school mentions minions, that summons a cyclops or other monster as an ally (you can have up to three allies) they aren't very powerful, but they can draw attacks away from yourself.
-I personally didn't try the death school, because I personally don't like death, but I've had allies in death school. Not all attack cards drain HP, but the ones that do are fairly strong. If you think it's worth those few good cards, then by all means.
-Fire was initially my first school and I found that the lingering damage wasn't worth it.
